"Lifting the boot lid of a car, to be confronted by a ‘rout’, ‘walk’, or ‘escargatoire’ of snails - for these are the collective nouns by which they are known – is never the best start. Indeed, this once fine Bentley S1, dating from 1957, has been languishing upon the owner’s drive for well over 30 years so they have had plenty of time to set up home. Apparently, a small engine problem that was never repaired resulted in this exceptionally long period of inactivity. Treated to a ‘Rolls-Royce conversion’ at some point in its life, the car has obviously deteriorated way beyond restoration but will still yield some now, quite hard to find components for other more deserving causes. It will pass through our recycling department shortly, but hopefully at more than a snail’s pace."
