Question: My Silver Shadow has developed a whine in the torque converter (GM400) during acceleration. It only happens from cold and goes within a mile. It never happens in hot weather. There are no other problems, changes are silky smooth. I have removed and replaced about 2.5 litres of fluid, but no improvement. Should I now change the filter and O-rings? Any tips on doing this would be appreciated
Answer: Yes you should change the filter and all the oil and hopefully it will clear the whine. The only other possible fault could be a crack in the flexi plate that is bolted to the starter ring gear - you may be able to see this if you remove the cover on the underside of the bell housing.

On another subject, what is the most likely reason for lack of response from rear suspension, this is on my friend's Bentley T of a similar era.
Answer: You can find all the relevant details in the workshop manuals below in Volume 2 in section J titled Final Drive. These are available on CD, USB or available to download. The gearbox filter kit comes with the 2 o rings you need. I would suggest that your friends rear suspension may be down to a lack of pressure in the accumulator spheres - if he starts the car and runs it for a couple of minutes to build up accumulator pressure (the 2 warning lights need to go out), then turn the engine off but leave the ignition on and pump the brake pedal - it should take about 40 pumps to depressurise both accumulators and bring the 2 warning lights on. Much fewer than 40 and I would recommend that he replaces both spheres. Good luck - let us know if you need any further information.
